As I will be on vacation from today on until July 12, despite the fact that I am putting all regular posts on hold, I wanted to continue with Word Wise posts, and simply combine 6 words into one post. Here they are along with sentences of my own creation:
OBELISK
Noun; a tall, four sided stone column that becomes narrower toward the top and that ends in a point
My example sentence: I remember travelling to Washington DC when I was 10 years old, and marveling at the obelisk of the Washington Monument.
POTENT
Adjective; very effective
My example sentence: While participating in a debate at school, I had to come up with potent evidence about my topic for me to be successful in persuading my opponent.
CHAFF
Verb; to tease in a friendly way
My example sentence: After I came in 5th place in the town spelling bee, some of my friends began to chaff me, but I knew they were happy with how I did.
MANIFEST
Adjective; easy to detect or recognize
My example sentence: My sisters had hidden from me during a game of hide-and-seek, but their hiding places were manifest, and I found them quickly.
LAVISH
Adjective; given in large amounts
My example sentence: I was impressed by the lavish display of decorations at the holiday party last year; it must have taken forever to put them up.
ASTUTE
Adjective; having or showing an ability to notice and understand things quickly
My example sentence: His astute personality would serve him well as a detective, for he would be able to pick up the smallest of clues in no time at all.
