The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Reason: I thought that the beginning of the book was a little boring, but once the fourth stage of the testing begun it got really addicting.
Overall Description: It is graduation day in the Five Lakes Colony. Cia has lived there her whole life. But now, will her grades be good enough to send her to the university? At the university, Cia will study for several years to then take on a course to help revitalize the world that was once destroyed by war. One by one, each name is called out. But there is no mention of anyone going to the university. There hasn’t been one in 10 years. Cia is disappointed if not angry with herself. Was she not good enough? As it turns out, her fate has not been determined yet. After being called in for a private meeting, she is told she will be leaving for The Testing. Her family is excited, but her father, who also took part in the testing, has his concerns. Once Cia leaves for The Testing, she meets Michal. He is really nice, but has the testing already begun? She has discovered cameras in the skimmers (cars that float above the ground) and in the cabin where they eat lunch. When she arrives at the Testing facility, she meets Tomas and a few other candidates from her colony. She is then introduced to her room-mate- Ryme. The first stage of the Testing begins. It’s the mental part. She is quizzed on four different subjects: History, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Science. After the first round, she passes. But she finds several candidates that have, well, disappeared. In addition, Ryme has killed herself. Was it too much pressure? Then, part 2 begins. This time it is physical. They are faced with several puzzles, but the consequences for failing are terrifying. Miraculously, Cia outperforms and passes Round 2. Yet again, more candidates are eliminated. Now it is time for Stage 3. Group work. The test seems easy, but has one of their partners fooled them all? Not Cia. She passes and moves on to Round 4. They are transported to Chicago, and are challenged with returning back to Tosu City. After teaming up with Tomas and overcoming obstacles both Cia and Tomas pass Stage 4. But is it enough? Only 4 letters will determine whether she makes it to the University: PASS or FAIL.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book. I found it very intriguing. I think others like would really enjoy this book.
